THE AFTERMATH

We covered just over 1600 miles in four days, using 45 gallons of unleaded at an average of 35 mpg. That equates to around £220 in fuel. Depreciation will be virtually non-existent on a £600 car. The DVLA would refund the 11 complete months of remaining tax, the month used so far costing around £25. Similarly I could get a refund of most of the insurance costs. Let's say £300 in total for the car, and add to that the £135 for the Shuttle. That's less than £450 between two people. And there's the whole experience of visiting new places, driving through snowy mountains and inhaling a late night McDonald's in Lausanne which wouldn't have happened if we had flown.

But the car is not for sale. Not yet. Sven and I have now covered nearly 4000 miles together in just over four weeks. Something of a bromance is developing. And since this £600, 2001 Volvo S80 seemed distinctly underwhelmed by the whole Geneva thing, the next trip will be more of a challenge. More to follow.
